Matthew 13:24-30:
in gathering the weeds you would
uproot the wheat along with them
(vs 29)
Reflection on Matthew 13: 24-30:
by the Rev Wanda Copeland
How many of us have weeded a garden, especially when the plants were young and did no have strong roots. Often those things we call weeds have a much stronger anchor in the ground and grow quickly. When we pull them up, the desired plants can come with them. Many of us are willing to sacrifice a plant or two to this necessary removal of the undesired weeds. Either we can get others or we were planning to thin the rows when they grew more, or we are willing to sacrifice some things for the sake of some others. In this parable, Jesus is saying, "No, all of the plants are sacred. All are important. Each grain of wheat that has germinated is worth fighting for." Our first instinct is to see how that correlates to humans. Of course God loves us so much that Jesus died to redeem our sins. That is a point that has been re-iterated again and again. But what if we were to imagine that God loves us so much that it would be unconsciounable that even a stalk of wheat be lost? Can we even comprehend a God that loves the world so much that every grain of wheat is significant. What if we started living our lives as if that were true?
