1 Kings 3: 5-12:
I am only a little child
(vs 7)
Reflection on 1 Kings 3: 5-12:
by the Rev Wanda Copeland
How easy it is to diminish what we can affect because of our relative insignificance to the mainstream of society. Equally, how easy it is to be overwhelmed by the enormity of life¹s problems and feel that what we do does not have an impact on the whole. Most Americans recognize that our environment has significantly degraded in the last century. Yet, words like global warming and rainforest destruction make the environmental problems seem out of our reach. How can the actions of one person really make a difference? How can what I do here influence what happens halfway around the planet? Like the mustard seed in Matthew 13, even the smallest of efforts can produce powerful results if well "planted" and fed with the right fertilizer. Our efforts to simplify our lives, to reduce our consumption from all energy sources, to reduce our personal waste do make a difference. When coupled with the efforts of thousands and millions of other individuals, our efforts can grow into a tidal wave of positive change. We are powerful, what we do is significant.
