Lectionary Reflection
Year A, Proper 13, New Testament Lesson
Romans 8: 35-39:
For I am convinced that … nor
anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us form the love
of God in Christ Jesus our Lord
(vs 38-39)
Reflection on Romans 8: 35-39:
by the Rev Wanda Copeland
The Nicene Creed tells us that Jesus Christ is "of one Being with the
Father, and through all things were made." Jesus is of the same creative
substance as God the "maker of heaven and earth." If God created
all that has been and all that is, then all creation contains that "good"
spark with which it has been infused by God. If all things were made
through Jesus, the redemptive act of crucifixion and resurrection fulfilled
by Jesus can be claimed by all of creation, not just by humans. Redemption
is for us all, and has the redeeming effect on us all, not just humans.
Therefore, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ.
And nothing can separate us from the love that all of creation receives
from Jesus. Simultaneously, nothing can separate us from the pain
of creation as it is being destroyed. As we participate in the joy
and affection of God¹s love, so do we jointly share in the deep sadness
at destruction of species, of disintegration of ecosystems, of infertility
of formerly-healthy environments. Literally, we are all in this together
through the Creator who brought all of us into being..
