Lectionary Reflection
Year A, Proper 17, New Testament Lesson
Romans 12:1-8
Do not be conformed to this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern
what is the will of God
(vs 6)
Reflection on Romans 12: 1-8
by the Rev Wanda Copeland
I never how realized how difficult it is to be separate from the mainstream
until the last two years under our current President. It seems people everywhere
are clamoring for less government oversight and guidance on environmental
policy. Let corporations take the lead as they know the best. Market forces
will drive out the dangerous ones. Less taxes means more discretionary
money so that individuals can do ‘the right thing’. Unfortunately, our
history proves again and again that we do not all have the courage of character
and social responsibility to care for the common good.
We must take our understanding of God’s call to be stewards as our
transformation that will inevitably take us out of touch with political
and social leaders. We have to steel ourselves to be standing against the
current of popular opinion. God does transform our hearts, and perhaps
through our determination and commitment, God can transform this time and
nation.
