Lectionary Reflection
Year A, Proper 27, Gospel

Amos 5: 18-24

Take away from me the noise of your songs;
I will not listen to the melody of your harps.
But let justice roll down like waters,
and righteousness like an everflowing stream.
(verses 23-24)

Reflection on Amos 5: 18-24
by the Rev Tom Harries

Christians have long understood the need to love our neighbors as applied to other people. But I suggest that all God's creatures indeed the whole created order is our neighbor. If that's true, then we are called to love them as we love ourselves. How should we love them? By treating them with justice and compassion. Justice is not the whole of love, but it is an essential component of love. Using the image of water rolling down a mighty stream, Amos reminds us that God is much more concerned about justice than about the quality of our worship.
