Psalm 130
1Out
of the depths have I called to you, O LORD; LORD, hear
my voice; *
- let your ears consider well the
voice of my supplication.
2If you, LORD, were to note what is done amiss, *
- O LORD, who could stand?
3For
there is forgiveness with you; *
- therefore you shall be feared.
4I
wait for the LORD; my soul waits for him; *
- in his word is my hope.
|
5My
soul waits for the LORD,
more than watchmen for the morning, *
- more than watchmen for the morning.
6O
Israel, wait for the LORD, *
- for with the LORD there is mercy;
7With
him there is plenteous redemption, *
- and he shall redeem Israel from
all their sins.

Reflection on Psalm 130
by the Rev Dcn Helen Hanten
Psalm 130 is a cry for help;
a deliverance from whatever troubles the writer who knows God
is merciful and has great power to redeem sinners. The writer
knows that everyone has need for redemption, but it appears
his burden is so great that he is seriously awaiting signs of
God's mercy and steadfast love.
He then suggests Israel should
take the same attitude in all its difficulties.
Might we suggest that the governments,
businesses, institutions and, indeed, individuals who have ignored
the effects of climate change and particularly the evidence
that human endeavor is responsible for much of it, take a more
open stance. A merciful God will perhaps forgive our honest
mistakes, but a refusal to consider the evidence while continuing
to contribute to the problem is testing God's great powers of
redemption.
