Lectionary Reflection
Year B, Proper 22, Psalm
Psalm 8
| O LORD our Governor, *
how exalted is your Name in all the world! Out of the mouths of infants and children *
You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries,
*
When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,
*
What is man that you should be mindful of him? *
|
You have made him but little lower than the angels;
*
you adorn him with glory and honor; You give him mastery over the works of your hands;
*
All sheep and oxen, *
The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, *
O LORD our Governor, *

Reflection on Psalm
8:
by the Rev Dcn Helen Hanten
This psalm is written in praise and thanksgiving for the creation, and
the writer expresses wonder that the Creator has made human life
"but little lower than the angels, adorned with glory and honor"
in the scheme of things. What a great honor, and what a responsibility
to be the stewards of all God has created! Saving diversity of life
on the planet is not just a good idea, or a responsibility to our children
and grandchildren – it is a theological and spiritual issue. We hold
God's great, fragile gift in our own hands.
