Lectionary Reflection

Year B, Proper 23
New Testament Reading

Hebrews 3:1-6

"My friends, God has chosen you to be his holy people." (Contemporary English Translation)

Reflection on Hebrews 3:1-6
by the Rev Wanda Copeland

What does it mean to be God's holy people? The Scriptures are replete with calls to be holy. We are to pattern our lives after God's statutes, to write God's commandments on our hearts, to live as if that were the only way to view life. Our place in God's heart is the most revered space. Some even say that we are the crowning achievement of creation. Whether that is your perspective or not, we are part of creation. We are not set over against it, we are part of the same fabric of life as all other elements on this mortal coil.

Is it possible that our holiness comes because we allow ourselves to believe we are not set apart? Is it true that we are so beloved because we grasp the great joy it means to be part of God's great joy? Can we be holy because we, in some small measure, take on God's persona?
