Options using the Resolution on Spirituality of Food Production:

Objectives

  • Learn about and give thanks for the blessing of the land itself.
  • Extend the concept of creation care to caring for the land.
  • Plan some action to enrich the land around the church.

Children's Program

Preparation:

Activities

  • Ask children what plants grow in. Emphasize that, with a few exceptions every plant requires soil to grow.
  • Remind children of the story of God promising a "land flowing with milk and honey" to the people of Israel.
    And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; {Exodus 3:8}
  • Learn and sing, "Dirt made my lunch."
  • Examine sand, black dirt, and mud. Talk about what kinds of things grow in each. Ask which is best for growing food for people. Talk about what makes for good soil (decayed matter, bacteria, worms, fungi, aeration, etc.)
  • Walk around outside the church buildings and ask the children for ideas for nurturing the land or gardens. Arrange for them to carry out one of their ideas the next week or in the spring
