Reflection on Psalm
98: 9
by Nan
Stokes
The lectionary texts for today
are full of awful things that will happen to many of us when
the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. It is a comfort
to know that we will be given words and wisdom so we can testify
before our opponents and not a hair of our heads will perish.
But the words of the psalm today are what we want to hear, read,
mark and inwardly digest, as the collect reads. The psalm is
overflowing with wonderful reminders of how all of Creation
sings praises to the Creator. Imagine the rivers clapping their
hands! And the hills ringing out with joy! That is the way we
want to greet the Lord with joy and singing and shouting.
We can imagine the psalmist sitting by a stream and feeling
the heart leap at the realization that God is everywhere. How
can we not worship him? It would certainly help if we had a
harp or a trumpet, but if even the sea is encouraged to make
a noise, we can shout with our joy on that day when he shall
judge the world. Maybe that is the wisdom we will be given.
